Serge Dedina moved to IB in 1971 at the age of seven. He grew up on the southeast side of IB near the entrance to Ream Field. He graduated from Harbor View Elementary (now IB Charter), Mar Vista Junior High and Mar Vista High School (1982).
Serge put himself through UCSD while working as a City of Imperial Beach and Silver Strand State Beach Lifeguard where he rescued more than 500 swimmers.
While growing up in Imperial Beach, Serge helped conserve the coastline and open space that make Imperial Beach one of the most beautiful beach cities in California. As a member of the Imperial Beach Youth Commission and Tidelands Advisory Committee, Serge worked with residents, the business community and government agencies to improve the quality of life for residents of Imperial Beach, including rebuilding the Imperial Beach Pier after it was destroyed in winter storms.
Serge is the Executive Director and co-founder of WILDCOAST, an award winning non-profit organization for both its programs and high standards of financial and administrative management.
Serge is the author of Saving the Gray Whale, Wild Sea, and Surfing the Border: Adventures at the Edge of the Ocean. His essay on the Imperial Beach pier was published in Piers of the California Coast and his articles on Imperial Beach and the California and Baja California coastlines have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Surfer’s Journal, San Diego Union-Tribune and California Coast and Ocean and many other publications. He writes a column, “Mayor’s Corner” for the Imperial Beach Eagle & Times.
As a father of two boys, Daniel (20) and Israel (22), Serge worked to make Imperial Beach a more family-friendly community. He was involved in the effort to build a free community skatepark, provided scholarships for children to attend Junior Lifeguard programs, and was active in efforts to stop the proposed privatization of IB Little League and fees for the IB Skatepark.
As a member of the Mar Vista High Poseidon Advisory Board, Serge mentored MVHS students and provided them with internship and volunteer opportunities. He was a member of the Sheriff’s Community Advisory Group and co-founded the Imperial Beach Collaborative.
While Mayor, Serge has championed investing in our neighborhoods, fighting for our beaches, promoting job creation and making City Hall more resident and business friendly. Whether he's working to combat blight or traveling to Sacramento, Washington D.C. and Mexico City to fight for clean beaches, Serge always puts the residents of IB first.
Serge has a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, a M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.A. from UCSD. He also attended the Harvard Business School's Executive Education Program.
A first generation American, Serge has been married to his wife Emily for 29 years.
